LINZ-DONAWITZ (LD) SLAG
BASIC OXYGEN FURNACE (BOF) SLAG
Linz-Donawitz (LD) slag, or Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag, is a byproduct produced during steelmaking when impurities are removed from molten iron.
It is highly alkaline, containing significant free-lime (CaO and MgO), making it valuable for construction materials and as a raw material for cement.
The material is characterized by its hard and dense nature, which gives it high abrasion resistance and makes it suitable for demanding industrial processes. Its angular particle structure improves interlocking within cement matrices, while proper aging ensures chemical and physical stability, preventing unwanted reactions during use. In the cement industry, it is valued as a source of calcium oxide (CaO) and iron (Fe), both of which are essential components in clinker formation. Because of its composition, it can partially replace clinker, helping to maintain or even improve cement strength while also enhancing long-term durability by refining the microstructure.
In terms of applications within a cement plant, the material can be used as a clinker grinding additive, where it aids in improving grinding efficiency and overall performance. It may also be incorporated in limited quantities into the raw mix, depending on process requirements, and is commonly used in the production of blended cement. Additionally, it can act as a substitute for gypsum in controlling setting time or be used for iron correction in the raw mix.
Overall, this material offers multiple advantages to cement plants. By partially replacing clinker, it helps reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions associated with clinker production, thereby improving sustainability. It also lowers production costs by utilizing a readily available industrial by-product, while its consistent quality ensures reliable performance in cement manufacturing.
